In the fast-evolving digital landscape, designing an intuitive learning platform for a creative field like acting is no small feat. Renowned acting coach Saurabh Sachdeva envisioned digitizing his physical acting classes, leading to the creation of The Actor`s Truth app – a groundbreaking platform that merges the tactile nature of acting with the flexibility of online learning.
In an exclusive interview, Kishor Fogla, Founder of Yellow Slice, shared how innovative UI/UX design helped redefine acting education.
1. When Saurabh Sachdeva shared his vision for The Actor`s Truth with Yellow Slice, what excited you the most about the project? How did you approach simplifying the process of learning acting through design?
Kishor Fogla explained that what excited the team the most was the challenge of digitizing a highly expressive and tactile art form like acting. From the very beginning, Saurabh had a clear vision of wanting to replicate the experience of a physical acting class in a digital format. The challenge was to make the learning process engaging and interactive while ensuring that emotional expressions, body language, and vocal modulations could be effectively taught through a mobile app.
2. Acting education in the digital space comes with unique challenges. What were some of the biggest roadblocks you faced, and how did The Actor`s Truth introduce new solutions to modernize actor training?
Mr.Kishor Fogla highlighted that one of the biggest challenges was that acting cannot be taught just through videos. Traditional edtech platforms like Byju`s and Upgrad struggled because creative fields require a hands-on approach. The solution involved creating a hybrid model combining live sessions, assignments, peer reviews, and Q&A sessions with Saurabh and other renowned actors. The app recorded real-life acting classes with 20 students over two months, allowing learners to see live performances, mistakes, and corrections – making the learning experience more authentic.
3. Traditional acting schools can feel rigid and expensive. How did you use UX/UI design to make the learning journey feel more natural and engaging for aspiring actors?
Yellow Slice focused on designing a cinematic video player with easy controls, clean layouts, and minimal distractions. The design followed the principle of progressive disclosure – information was revealed gradually as users progressed through the course, mimicking the structure of a real-world class. The platform also used earthy tones, subtle textures, and high-contrast typography to create a theater-like feel, ensuring that the app was both stylish and user-friendly.
4. One key challenge with online learning is the lack of direct mentorship. How did you design the platform to ensure students feel connected with industry experts and receive meaningful guidance?
To bridge the gap between students and mentors, Yellow Slice incorporated live sessions where students could interact directly with Saurabh and other industry experts. The app also included gamification elements like progress bars, badges, and streaks to keep students motivated. The direct mentorship combined with peer reviews ensured that learners felt supported and part of a community.
5. How does The Actor`s Truth app differentiate itself from other online acting education programs and what unique features make it stand out?
Kishor explained that The Actor`s Truth is not a self-paced course. Unlike other edtech platforms, it follows a hybrid business model that combines live sessions with structured assignments and real-time feedback. Students can see how others are performing, receive corrections, and work on practical assignments. The design incorporated picture-in-picture mode to allow learners to practice while watching lessons – an active learning approach rarely seen in online platforms.
6. Balancing self-paced learning with live sessions and daily activities isn’t easy. What design strategies did you use to create a smooth and immersive learning flow for students?
Yellow Slice team used a mix of emotional and cognitive learning strategies. The app was designed to adapt to different learning speeds and styles through progressive disclosure. Students could track their progress, receive targeted feedback, and practice in stages. Real-world scenarios were integrated into the app to mimic the experience of learning in a physical acting studio. Designers also attended acting classes with Saurabh to understand real-world challenges and replicate them digitally.
7. The app features documentary-style video lessons to mimic real-world acting classes. What specific UI/UX elements helped make this format more authentic and engaging?
The design included mobile-first features with visual cues for facial expressions, voice modulation, and body movement. Waveform visuals were used to guide vocal pitch and tone, while visual guides for body posture and facial expressions helped students understand how to improve their performance. The app also recorded real-time workshops with other students, providing an organic and interactive experience.
8. Yellow Slice has handled various digital projects – what made The Actor`s Truth different? Did it push your team to think or create differently?
Mr. Kishor explained that The Actor`s Truth was different because it combined the physical and digital learning experiences. The team followed a STEP process (Soak, Think, Execute, Proof) – conducting market research, user research, and competitor analysis. Designers attended Saurabh`s acting classes to understand how acting is taught, which helped them translate that experience into the app’s design. The iterative process ensured that the final product was user-friendly and effective.
9. Looking ahead, how do you think UX/UI design will influence the future of online education, especially for creative fields like acting?
Mr. Kishor Fogla believes that the future of edtech will focus on personalization and immersion. AI will play a key role in tailoring the learning experience to individual strengths and weaknesses. Adaptive content, real-time feedback, and peer reviews will create a more engaging and customized learning journey. The Actor`s Truth is already paving the way by offering a personalized, interactive, and emotionally engaging learning environment.
The Actor`s Truth combines real-world acting instruction with the convenience of online learning. Yellow Slice’s innovative UX/UI design creates an immersive experience, blending cinematic elements with interactive feedback and real-time mentorship, setting a new benchmark for creative education.
