Honorary Degree Nomination Procedures

Nomination Process

Nominations for honorary degrees can be made by any member of the faculty, staff, student body, administration, Board of Trustees, or alumni of the university. Self-nominations are not accepted. The nominator must submit a narrative letter highlighting the significance of the candidate’s achievements and the reasons for their nomination. This should be accompanied by a biographical sketch of the candidate and any supporting documents such as letters of recommendation, articles about the nominee, or written works by the nominee.

Submission and Review

Nominations are sent to the Office of the President, which compiles dossiers for the Honors and Awards Committee. The committee reviews the nominations, asks for additional information if necessary, and duplicates the dossiers for committee members. Early in the academic year, the President convenes the Honors and Awards Committee to discuss and select nominees for the honorary degrees. The committee considers various factors, including a balance of fields and previous recipients, before making recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

Selection and Announcement

The Board of Trustees reviews the committee’s recommendations and selects the final candidates for honorary degrees. The Board also sets the date for the conferral of the degrees, usually at the Commencement or a special Convocation. Honorary degrees are generally not conferred in absentia except under extraordinary circumstances. Once approved, the President or a designee contacts the candidates to inform them of their selection.

Criteria for Selecting Honorary Degree Recipients

Honorary degrees are awarded in four categories, each with specific criteria:

Doctor of Laws (LL.D.): Awarded for distinguished service to the state, nation, learning, or humankind, coupled with intellectual gifts and moral qualities.

Doctor of Letters (Litt.D.) or Doctor of Fine Arts (D.F.A.): Recognizes distinguished service to letters, art, music, or education, coupled with widely recognized intellectual and moral qualities.

Doctor of Science (Sc.D.): Given for distinguished service to science, coupled with personal qualities and a kind of learning recognized by a high-standing educational body.

Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.): Honors distinguished service of a general nature, coupled with personal qualities and learning acknowledged by a prestigious educational body.

Past Honorary Degree Recipients

Universities often have a rich history of past honorary degree recipients, ranging from Nobel laureates to distinguished public servants, influential artists, and leading scientists. This illustrious list serves as an indicator of the high standards maintained by these institutions and the significant impact of the recipients’ contributions.
